  • Understanding Inches and Fractional Increments on US Rulers
On the US Customary side of a ruler, the numbered increments are called inches.

Within each inch, you'll find smaller increments, typically:

    * Eighths of an inch: Marked by short lines.

    * Quarters of an inch: Marked by longer lines.

    * Sixteenths of an inch: Marked by the shortest lines.

Sometimes rulers will also include marks for halves of an inch or thirty-seconds of an inch.
