  • Balancing Chemical Equations: Coefficients vs. Subscripts Explained
Changing coefficients, not subscripts, is one of the steps of balancing a chemical equation. When balancing a chemical equation, coefficients are used to adjust the number of atoms of each element on both sides of the equation to ensure that the law of conservation of mass is upheld. Subscripts, on the other hand, indicate the number of atoms of each element within a molecule or compound and cannot be changed without affecting the chemical identity of the substance.
