  • NYC Access to Justice: Empowering Tenants in Housing Court
    In New York City, housing court is often the last hope for low income tenants facing evicton or dangerous living conditions.But until recently the system was stacked against them. Tenants were often unrepresented , intimidated by landlords and unfamiliar with the legal process.

    To address this imbalance the city launched

    Access of justice program in 2017 which provides free legal representation to tenants in housing court . The program has made a huge difference for low income tenants allowing them to fight for thir right and stay in their homes .

    How the Access to Justice Program Works

    The Acces to Justice program recruits and trains volunteer lawyers to represent low - income tenants in housing court .These volunteers are often law students recent law school graduates or retired lawyers who are passionate about helping people in need .The volunteers provide free legal representation to tenants in a variety of housing matters including:

    -Eviction

    -Discrimination

    -Repairs and

    -Lease violations

    The program also offers support services for tenants such as :

    -Legal clinics

    -Legal document assistance and

    -Referrals to other community resources

    The impact of the Access to Justice Program

    Since its launch the Access to Justice program has helped thousands of low -income tenants fight for their rights in housing court .The program has:

    -Reduced the eviction rates of low -income tenants

    -Increased the success rates of tenants in housing court

    -Helped tenants obtain repairs to their apartments

    -Prevented homelessness for many low -income families

    -Empowerd low-income tenants to stand up for their rights and fight for a safe and stable place to live.

    Challenges facing the Access of Justice Program

    Despite its success the Access to Justice program also faces a number of challenges. These challenges include:

    --Funding :The program is primarily funded by city grants and foundation grants. However, these funds are not always stable and the program is often forced to operate on a shoestring budget.

    -Volunteer capacity :The program relies on volunteer lawyers to provide representation to tenants. However finding and retaining volunteer lawyers can be difficult.

    -Oppostion from landlords : Some landlords are opposed to the Acces to Justice program because they believe that it makes it more difficult to evict tenants.They also argue that the program is too costly and that it takes away resources from other city programs.

    Despite these challenges, the Access to Justice program has been a huge success and has made a real difference in the lives of low- income tenants in New York City. The program has helped to level the playing field in housing court and has given tenants a fighting chance to stay in their homes.
