The Walk Free Foundation, a global human rights organization, and the International Labour Organization (ILO) estimate that there are 40.3 million people enslaved worldwide. This includes people who are in forced labor, forced marriage, or human trafficking.
* Forced labor occurs when someone is forced to work against their will under threat of punishment.
* Forced marriage occurs when someone is forced to marry someone they do not want to marry, and
* Human trafficking occurs when someone is transported, harbored, or received for the purpose of exploitation, such as forced labor or sexual exploitation.
Where Does Slavery Exist?
Slavery exists in all parts of the world, including the United States. However, it is most prevalent in developing countries where poverty, inequality, and weak governance create conditions that make people vulnerable to exploitation.
Who is Most at Risk of Slavery?
Women and girls are disproportionally at risk of slavery. They are often victims of gender discrimination and violence, which makes them more vulnerable to being exploited. Children are also at risk of slavery, especially those who are homeless, orphaned, or living in poverty.
What Can be Done to End Slavery?
There is no single solution to ending slavery. However, a number of steps can be taken to reduce the risk of exploitation, including:
- Strengthening laws and enforcement to protect workers' rights and punish traffickers.
- Raising awareness of the issue of slavery and encouraging people to report cases of exploitation.
- Providing education and opportunities to people at risk of slavery so they can improve their lives and become less vulnerable to exploitation.
- Supporting survivors of slavery by providing them with access to healthcare, counseling, and other services.
By working together, we can create a world where everyone is free from exploitation and slavery.
