  • Rocks: Abiotic or Biotic? Understanding Rock Formation
    A rock is abiotic.

    Here's why:

    * Abiotic means "non-living." Rocks are not made up of cells, don't grow or reproduce, and don't require energy to survive.

    * Biotic means "living." Living things are characterized by things like metabolism, growth, reproduction, and response to stimuli. Rocks don't exhibit any of these traits.
