    Specific gravity is a dimensionless number that represents the ratio of the density of a mineral to the density of water at 4°C. It is a useful measure for identifying minerals because it is relatively easy to determine.

    Imagine you have two blocks of equal size, one made of lead and one made of wood. The lead block will be much heavier than the wood block because lead atoms are much heavier than wood atoms. This means that lead has a higher density than wood.

    Similarly, minerals with a higher concentration of heavy elements or a tighter crystal structure will be denser than minerals with lighter elements or a looser structure.
