The Lone Cypress tree does not grow out of a rock. It grows from the ground, but it appears to be growing out of a rock because of the way the rock formation is shaped around the base of the tree.

The Lone Cypress is famous for its dramatic and precarious location on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Pebble Beach, California. The rock formation behind the tree gives the illusion that it is growing out of the rock.
