  • Understanding Surface Waves: Types and Impact on Earthquakes
The seismic wave found at the surface of the Earth is called a surface wave.

There are two main types of surface waves:

    * Love waves: These waves travel along the Earth's surface and cause horizontal shaking. They are the fastest of the surface waves and are responsible for much of the damage caused by earthquakes.

    * Rayleigh waves: These waves also travel along the Earth's surface but cause a rolling motion, similar to waves on the ocean. They are slower than Love waves but can still cause significant damage.

While body waves (P-waves and S-waves) travel through the Earth's interior, surface waves are confined to the surface and are responsible for the majority of shaking felt during an earthquake.
