  • Carbon Cycle: Where Does Dissolved Carbon from Runoff Go?
Most of the carbon that is dissolved by flowing water over rock ends up in the ocean.

    Here's how it works:

    * Weathering: When water flows over rocks, it dissolves minerals like calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and releases carbon dioxide (CO2) into the water. This process is called weathering.

    * River Transport: Rivers carry this dissolved carbon to the ocean.

    * Ocean Storage: The ocean acts as a massive carbon sink, absorbing and storing vast amounts of dissolved carbon. Some of this carbon is used by marine organisms for photosynthesis, while some is incorporated into the ocean's carbonate system.

While some of the dissolved carbon can be released back into the atmosphere through processes like volcanic eruptions and decomposition, the ocean plays a crucial role in regulating Earth's carbon cycle and climate.
