  • Rock Weathering: 3 Key Processes That Break Down Stone
Here are 3 things that can weather rocks:

    1. Water: Water can freeze and expand in cracks, breaking the rock apart (frost wedging). It can also dissolve some minerals in the rock, weakening it.

    2. Wind: Wind can carry sand and other abrasive particles that can wear down rocks over time (abrasion).

    3. Plants: Plant roots can grow into cracks in rocks and, as they grow, exert pressure that can break the rock apart.
