  • Mélange: Definition, Formation, and Composition of Chaotic Rocks
An accumulation of different sedimentary and metamorphic rocks combined with scraps of ocean crust is called a mélange.

    Here's why:

    * Mélange is a geological term for a chaotic mixture of rock fragments of different sizes and origins.

    * Sedimentary rocks form from the accumulation of sediment.

    * Metamorphic rocks form when existing rocks are transformed by heat, pressure, or chemical reactions.

    * Ocean crust is the layer of igneous rock that forms the ocean floor.

Mélanges are typically formed in subduction zones, where one tectonic plate slides beneath another. The intense pressure and heat of the subduction process can mix and deform the rocks, creating a jumbled mix of different types. The scraps of ocean crust are often included in mélanges because they are scraped off the descending plate and incorporated into the overlying plate.
