  • How Rocks Become Sedimentary: Understanding Sediment Formation
Any type of rock can be broken into fragments that may later form sedimentary rock! Here's why:

    * Sedimentary rocks are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments.

    * Sediments are fragments of existing rocks, minerals, or even organic matter.

    * Igneous rocks, metamorphic rocks, and even other sedimentary rocks can be weathered and eroded into sediments.

    Examples:

    * Granite (igneous) can be broken down into sand grains.

    * Marble (metamorphic) can be eroded into pebbles.

    * Limestone (sedimentary) can be fragmented into smaller pieces.

The process of breaking down rocks into sediments is called weathering, and the process of moving those sediments is called erosion.
