  • Earth's Layers: A Comprehensive Guide to the Crust, Mantle, and Core
The Earth's interior is divided into four main layers:

    1. Crust:

    * This is the outermost and thinnest layer, composed of solid rock.

    * It's divided into the oceanic crust (thinner, denser, and younger) and the continental crust (thicker, less dense, and older).

    2. Mantle:

    * The largest layer, extending from the crust to the outer core.

    * Composed of mostly solid rock, but behaves like a very viscous fluid over long periods due to immense heat and pressure.

    * It's responsible for plate tectonics and volcanic activity.

    3. Outer Core:

    * A liquid layer composed mainly of iron and nickel.

    * Extremely hot and generates Earth's magnetic field.

    4. Inner Core:

    * A solid sphere of iron and nickel, despite the extremely high temperature.

    * The intense pressure prevents the iron from melting, making it solid.

Here's a simple analogy: Imagine an apple.

    * Crust: The skin of the apple.

    * Mantle: The fleshy part of the apple.

    * Outer Core: The core of the apple, which is mostly liquid.

    * Inner Core: The seed of the apple, which is solid.
