  • Understanding Oceanic Plates: A Guide to Major Tectonic Plates
It's not accurate to say there are only *two* oceanic plates. The Earth's lithosphere is actually divided into many different tectonic plates, and some of them are predominantly oceanic.

Here are some of the major oceanic plates:

    * Pacific Plate: The largest tectonic plate on Earth, it's mostly oceanic and is home to the "Ring of Fire" with its many volcanoes.

    * North American Plate: Though it includes the North American continent, a large portion is submerged beneath the Atlantic Ocean.

    * South American Plate: Similar to the North American Plate, it has a significant oceanic portion.

    * Eurasian Plate: Although primarily continental, it has a large oceanic portion in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

    * African Plate: Mostly continental, but has a smaller oceanic part in the Atlantic Ocean.

    * Indo-Australian Plate: This plate is made up of both India and Australia, but a large portion is submerged in the Indian Ocean.

    * Antarctic Plate: Mostly oceanic and surrounds the Antarctic continent.

    * Nazca Plate: A large oceanic plate off the coast of South America.

    * Cocos Plate: A smaller oceanic plate in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

    * Caribbean Plate: A smaller plate with both continental and oceanic components.

These are just some examples, and there are other smaller oceanic plates as well.
