    Chimney Rock, the famous landmark in Colorado, was formed by differential erosion.

    Here's how it works:

    * Resistant Rock: Chimney Rock is primarily composed of a very hard and erosion-resistant rock called igneous granite.

    * Softer Surroundings: This granite is surrounded by much softer, sedimentary rocks like sandstone and shale.

    * Erosion: Over millions of years, wind and water, the primary forces of erosion in the area, wore away the softer rocks. The harder granite was much slower to erode, leaving behind the towering, chimney-like structure.
