  • Understanding Earth's History: The Principle of Superposition
    The oldest rocks are on the bottom in layers of undisturbed sedimentary rock.

    This is known as the Principle of Superposition. It states that in undisturbed rock sequences, the oldest layers are found at the bottom, and the youngest layers are found at the top. This is because sediment is deposited over time, with newer layers accumulating on top of older ones.
