  • Impermeable Materials: Understanding Water Flow in Soil & Rock
The type of soil or rock that does not allow water to pass through is called impermeable.

    Here are some examples:

    * Clay: Clay particles are very small and tightly packed, making it difficult for water to move through.

    * Shale: Shale is a sedimentary rock formed from compacted clay, making it similarly impermeable.

    * Granite: Granite is a hard, igneous rock with very few pores or cracks for water to pass through.

    * Asphalt: This man-made material is designed to be impervious to water.

Important Note: Even though these materials are considered impermeable, they may still allow a small amount of water to seep through over time.
