  • Earth's Crust Thickness: Where is it Thickest and Why?
The thickest part of the Earth's crust is found under continental mountain ranges.

    Here's why:

    * Continental Crust: This type of crust is thicker than oceanic crust, typically ranging from 30-70 kilometers (19-43 miles).

    * Mountain Formation: When tectonic plates collide, the denser plate subducts under the less dense plate. This process causes the overlying crust to buckle and fold, creating mountains.

    * Thickening Process: The immense pressure and heat from the collision also cause the crust to thicken, resulting in the thickest crust found in these mountainous areas.

For example, the Himalayan Mountains, formed by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates, have some of the thickest crust on Earth.
