  • How Deep Does Rock Melt? Factors Affecting Melting Depth
    The depth at which rock melts is not a single, fixed number. It depends on several factors:

    * The composition of the rock: Different rock types have different melting points.

    * Pressure: Pressure increases with depth, and higher pressure increases the melting point of rocks.

    * Water content: The presence of water lowers the melting point of rocks.

    * Temperature gradient: The rate at which temperature increases with depth varies depending on location and geological conditions.

    Generally, rocks begin to melt at depths between 80-150 kilometers (50-93 miles). This is called the solidus, which is the depth at which the first melt forms. However, the liquidus, or the depth at which rock is completely melted, can be much deeper, even exceeding 300 kilometers (186 miles) in some cases.
