  • Deserts: What Defines a Desert - It's Not Just Flat Land
No, a flat piece of land is not automatically called a desert.

    Here's why:

    * Deserts are defined by their lack of precipitation. They receive very little rainfall, typically less than 10 inches per year.

    * Deserts can have various terrains. They can be flat, mountainous, rocky, or sandy.

    * A flat piece of land can be many other things: A plain, a prairie, a meadow, a steppe, a savanna, or even part of a larger ecosystem.

So, while some deserts are flat, not all flat pieces of land are deserts.
