  • Continental Crust: Definition, Composition & Characteristics
The layer of the Earth's crust that is not covered by ocean water is called continental crust.

    Here's why:

    * Continental crust is the thicker and less dense type of crust that makes up the continents. It's mostly composed of granite and other felsic rocks.

    * Oceanic crust is the thinner and denser type of crust that forms the ocean floor. It's primarily made of basalt and gabbro.

So, when we talk about the crust not covered by ocean water, we're referring to the continental crust.
