  • Lithosphere: Understanding Earth's Tectonic Plates
The layer along the crust that forms solid tectonic plates is the lithosphere.

The lithosphere is the rigid outermost layer of Earth, composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It is broken into large pieces called tectonic plates, which move and interact with each other, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and mountain building.
