  • Mantle Convection: Understanding Earth's Engine
The slow movement of mantle rock is called convection.

This movement is driven by heat from the Earth's core, which causes the mantle to heat up, become less dense, and rise. As it rises, it cools and becomes denser, sinking back down. This continuous cycle of heating, rising, cooling, and sinking creates a slow but powerful flow within the mantle.
