  • Rocky Mountains: Age & History - Are They the Oldest?
No, the Rocky Mountains are not the oldest mountain range on Earth.

While the Rockies are quite old, formed over millions of years, they are far from the oldest. Here's why:

    * Formation: The Rocky Mountains formed during the Laramide Orogeny, a period of mountain building that started about 80 million years ago.

    * Older Ranges: There are many mountain ranges that are much older, such as the Barberton Greenstone Belt in South Africa, which formed about 3.6 billion years ago. Other ancient ranges include the Transvaal Supergroup (3.2 billion years old) and the Canadian Shield (2.5 billion years old).

So, while the Rocky Mountains are impressive and relatively young, they are not the oldest mountain range on Earth.
