The term "biosphere" was coined by Vladimir Vernadsky, a Russian geologist and mineralogist, in 1926.

While others had used similar concepts before, Vernadsky was the first to formally define the biosphere as a distinct realm of life on Earth and to emphasize its interconnectedness with geological processes.
