It's important to note that this list considers the total height from base to summit, not just the elevation above sea level. This is why Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, both massive shield volcanoes, top the list, even though their peaks don't reach as high as Mount Everest.
While Mount Everest is the highest mountain above sea level, it only measures about 4,800 meters (15,748 feet) from base to summit.
