    The Twelve Apostles are formed from limestone.

    More specifically, they are made from a type of limestone called "Port Campbell Limestone", which was formed over millions of years from the accumulation of marine organisms' skeletons and shells. This limestone is relatively soft and easily eroded by the relentless pounding of the Southern Ocean waves, which has carved out the dramatic sea stacks we see today.
