There are two main types of weathering:

* Physical weathering: This involves the breakdown of rocks into smaller pieces without changing their chemical composition. Examples include frost wedging, abrasion, and thermal expansion/contraction.

* Chemical weathering: This involves the breakdown of rocks through chemical reactions that change their composition. Examples include oxidation, hydrolysis, and carbonation.

Once rocks are broken down into smaller pieces, they are called sediments.
