There are different types of fracture, each describing a different appearance:
* Conchoidal: Smooth, curved surfaces, like a broken piece of glass.
* Hackly: Sharp, jagged edges.
* Uneven: Irregular, rough surfaces.
* Splintery: Breaks into thin, splintery fragments.
* Fibrous: Breaks into fibers.
While cleavage describes a mineral's tendency to break along specific planes of weakness, resulting in smooth, flat surfaces, fracture describes the way a mineral breaks when it doesn't follow those specific planes.
