  • Sedimentary Rock: Formation, Process & Characteristics
    The rock formed as a result of deposits from weathering and erosion is called sedimentary rock.

    Here's how it happens:

    1. Weathering: Rocks are broken down into smaller pieces by forces like wind, rain, ice, and temperature changes.

    2. Erosion: These broken-down pieces are transported by wind, water, or ice to a new location.

    3. Deposition: The transported particles settle and accumulate in layers.

    4. Compaction and Cementation: Over time, the weight of overlying layers compresses the sediment, squeezing out water and air. Minerals dissolved in the water then crystallize between the particles, cementing them together to form solid rock.

    There are many types of sedimentary rocks, each formed from different types of sediment:

    * Clastic sedimentary rocks: Formed from fragments of other rocks, like sandstone, shale, and conglomerate.

    * Chemical sedimentary rocks: Formed from the precipitation of minerals from water, like limestone, rock salt, and gypsum.

    * Organic sedimentary rocks: Formed from the accumulation of organic matter, like coal and oil shale.
