  • Moraines: Understanding Glacier Deposits - Types & Formation
A large pile of rock and debris left by a receding glacier is called a moraine.

There are different types of moraines, depending on their location and how they formed:

    * Terminal moraine: This is the most prominent type, forming at the glacier's furthest point of advance.

    * Lateral moraine: These run along the sides of the glacier, made of debris that fell from the valley walls.

    * Medial moraine: Formed when two lateral moraines merge, running down the center of the glacier.

    * Recessional moraine: A series of moraines left behind as a glacier retreats in stages.

    * Ground moraine: A thin, uneven layer of debris spread across the landscape as the glacier melts.

Moraines are important geological features, providing evidence of past glacial activity and helping to shape the landscape.
