  • Mid-Ocean Ridges & Rift Mountains: Formation and Characteristics
Mountain chains formed by magma coming through rift zones are called mid-ocean ridges or rift mountains.

    Here's why:

    * Mid-Ocean Ridges: These are underwater mountain ranges that form along divergent plate boundaries. Magma rises from the mantle and erupts along the rift zone, creating new oceanic crust. Over time, this process builds up the ridge, creating a mountain range on the ocean floor.

    * Rift Mountains: These are mountain ranges that form on land along divergent plate boundaries. As the plates pull apart, the crust thins and fractures, creating valleys called rifts. Magma rises through these rifts and erupts, building up mountains on either side of the rift.

    Examples:

    * Mid-Atlantic Ridge: A massive undersea mountain range that runs down the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

    * East African Rift Valley: A series of rift valleys in eastern Africa where the African plate is pulling apart, creating mountains such as Mount Kilimanjaro.
