  • Lithosphere: Understanding Earth's Rigid Outer Layer - Crust & Mantle
The solid rigid outer layer of the Earth is called the lithosphere. It's composed of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle, which is a rigid and brittle layer.

The lithosphere is broken into large pieces called tectonic plates, which move and interact with each other, causing earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountain formation.
