  • Alkaline Earth Metals: Properties, Group 2 & Key Characteristics
The alkaline earths are associated with Group 2 of the periodic table.

    Here's why:

    * Periodic Table Organization: The periodic table is organized into columns called groups and rows called periods. Elements within the same group share similar chemical properties due to having the same number of valence electrons (electrons in the outermost shell).

    * Alkaline Earths: The alkaline earths are a group of six elements: beryllium (Be), magnesium (Mg), calcium (Ca), strontium (Sr), barium (Ba), and radium (Ra). They all have two valence electrons, which makes them highly reactive and likely to lose those electrons to form cations with a +2 charge.

    * Group 2: Group 2 of the periodic table is the column that contains all of the alkaline earth elements.
