  • Understanding Earth's Basic Landforms: Mountains, Hills, Plains & Plateaus
While there are many different landforms on Earth, the four basic landforms are:

    1. Mountains: Elevated areas of land with steep slopes and high peaks.

    2. Hills: Similar to mountains, but lower and with gentler slopes.

    3. Plains: Flat or gently rolling areas of land, often found at lower elevations.

    4. Plateaus: Elevated, flat or gently rolling areas of land with steep sides.

These basic landforms are further subdivided into many different types. For example, mountains can be categorized as volcanic, folded, fault-block, or dome mountains.
