  • Understanding Rock-Forming Minerals: Feldspar & Quartz
The two most common rock-forming mineral groups are:

    1. Feldspars: These are the most abundant group of minerals in the Earth's crust, making up around 60% of its composition. They are aluminosilicates with varying proportions of sodium, potassium, and calcium. Examples include orthoclase, albite, and plagioclase.

    2. Quartz: The second most abundant mineral group, quartz is a silicon dioxide (SiO2) mineral that is very hard and resistant to weathering. It is found in a variety of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

These two groups together make up a large majority of the rocks we see around us!
