  • Understanding Cap Rock: The Essential Seal for Reservoirs
The impermeable rock on top of a reservoir is called the cap rock.

    Here's why it's important:

    * Trapping the Reservoir: The cap rock acts as a seal, preventing the fluids (oil, gas, or water) within the reservoir from escaping upwards.

    * Impermeability: The cap rock is made of materials that don't allow fluids to pass through easily, like clay, shale, or salt.

    * Formation of Reservoirs: Without a cap rock, the fluids in the reservoir would simply leak out, making it impossible to extract them.

Example: Imagine a sponge full of water. The cap rock would be like a plastic wrap covering the top of the sponge, preventing the water from leaking out.
