  • Understanding Soil Horizons: Identifying the Newest Soil Layer
The O horizon is the most newly formed layer of soil.

    Here's why:

    * O horizon: This is the top layer, composed primarily of organic matter like leaves, twigs, and decomposing plant and animal remains. It's the layer where decomposition happens, and new soil is formed from the breakdown of organic material.

The other soil horizons (A, E, B, C, and R) are formed over much longer periods of time through weathering and the movement of materials.
