  • Coastal Landforms: Understanding Deposition - Beaches & Spits
Here are three coastal landforms formed by deposition:

    1. Beaches: Beaches are the most obvious example. Waves carry sand, pebbles, and other sediment towards the shore, where they are deposited. The size of the sediment and the strength of the waves influence the shape and type of beach formed.

    2. Spits: Spits are long, narrow stretches of sand or shingle that extend out from the coastline, often forming a hook shape. They are created when longshore drift (the movement of sediment along the coastline) carries sand or shingle around a headland or bay.

    3. Sand Dunes: Sand dunes form when wind carries sand inland from the beach and deposits it in hills. They are often found behind beaches and are stabilized by vegetation. The shape and size of the dunes are influenced by wind direction, vegetation, and the supply of sand.
