  • Soil Composition: Understanding the States of Matter in Soil
Soil is a complex mixture, not a single state of matter. It contains elements of all three:

    * Solid: Rocks, minerals, and organic matter make up the solid portion of soil.

    * Liquid: Water fills the spaces between soil particles and carries dissolved nutrients.

    * Gas: Air is present in the spaces between soil particles, providing oxygen for plant roots and soil organisms.

So, soil is a heterogeneous mixture of solid, liquid, and gas.
