  • Tectonic Plates in the U.S.: A Comprehensive Overview
There are three major tectonic plates that interact with the United States:

    * The North American Plate: This is the largest plate and the one on which most of the US sits.

    * The Pacific Plate: The western edge of the US (California, Oregon, Washington) is along the boundary of this plate.

    * The Juan de Fuca Plate: This smaller plate lies off the coast of the Pacific Northwest and is subducting beneath the North American Plate.

It's important to note that while the US sits on the North American Plate, there are many smaller plates and microplates along the Pacific coast, including the Juan de Fuca Plate and the Cocos Plate. These smaller plates contribute to the complex tectonic activity in the western US, including earthquakes and volcanoes.
