  • Understanding Sedimentary Rock Layers: The Role of Deposition
The process that causes many sedimentary rocks to have visible layers is deposition.

    Here's why:

    * Sedimentary rocks form from sediments: These sediments are tiny particles of rock, minerals, or organic matter that are transported by wind, water, or ice.

    * Deposition: As the transporting force loses energy (e.g., a river slowing down), the sediments settle out in layers. Heavier, coarser sediments settle first, followed by finer materials.

    * Compaction and cementation: Over time, the weight of overlying sediments compresses the layers and dissolved minerals in groundwater act as a cement, binding the particles together, forming solid rock.

This layered appearance, also called bedding, is a key characteristic of many sedimentary rocks.
