    The mining process that strips away soil and rock is called surface mining.

    * Mountaintop removal mining: This controversial method is used for coal deposits found in mountainous regions. The tops of mountains are removed, and the coal is extracted. This method has severe environmental impacts, including deforestation, erosion, and water pollution.

    Surface mining is a very efficient way to extract minerals, but it also has significant environmental impacts. The removal of overburden can disrupt ecosystems, pollute water sources, and cause erosion. These impacts can be minimized through responsible mining practices, but they are an important consideration when evaluating the environmental impacts of mining.
