  • Earth's Atmosphere: Understanding the Closest Layer (Troposphere)
The closest layer to Earth is the troposphere.

Here's a breakdown of the layers of the atmosphere:

    * Troposphere: This is the lowest layer, extending from the surface to about 7-15 km (4-9 miles) in altitude. It's where we live, and it contains most of the atmosphere's mass and water vapor. Weather occurs in this layer.

    * Stratosphere: This layer sits above the troposphere, extending up to about 50 km (31 miles). It's home to the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation.

    * Mesosphere: This layer lies above the stratosphere, extending to about 85 km (53 miles). It's where most meteors burn up.

    * Thermosphere: This layer is characterized by extremely high temperatures, reaching up to 1,500°C (2,732°F) or higher. However, the air is so thin that it wouldn't feel hot to us.

    * Exosphere: This is the outermost layer of the atmosphere, gradually fading into outer space.
