  • Composition of Tectonic Plates: Types of Rock & Structure
Tectonic plates are not composed of a single type of rock, but rather a variety of rock types, including:

    * Oceanic crust: Predominantly made of basalt and gabbro, which are igneous rocks formed from the cooling and solidification of magma.

    * Continental crust: Made of a mix of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks.

    * Igneous rocks like granite and diorite are common.

    * Metamorphic rocks like gneiss and schist are formed by the transformation of existing rocks under high pressure and heat.

    * Sedimentary rocks like limestone, sandstone, and shale are formed from the accumulation and cementation of sediments.

The specific rock type found in a tectonic plate depends on its location and formation process. For example, oceanic crust is primarily composed of basalt because it is formed from volcanic eruptions at mid-ocean ridges. Continental crust is more varied because it has been subjected to a wide range of geological processes over time.
