  • Varves: Understanding Glacial Sediment Layers in Lakes & Fjords
The term that describes the annual layers of sediment deposited in lakes and fjords by meltwater from glaciers is varves.

Varves are distinct layers of sediment that form in lakes and other water bodies due to seasonal variations in sediment supply. During the summer, meltwater carries a high amount of coarse sediment, resulting in a darker, coarser layer. In the winter, when meltwater is reduced, finer sediment settles, forming a lighter, finer layer.

These alternating layers provide a valuable record of past glacial activity and climate change.
