  • Understanding Soil Composition: Beyond Minerals, Air & Water
Besides rock particles (minerals), air, and water, soil is also made up of organic matter.

Organic matter is the decomposed remains of plants and animals, and includes:

    * Humus: The stable, well-decomposed part of organic matter that gives soil its dark color.

    * Living organisms: A diverse community of microbes, fungi, insects, and other creatures that contribute to soil health.

    * Roots: These live organisms play a role in soil aeration and nutrient cycling.

Other important components of soil include:

    * Nutrients: Essential elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that plants need to grow.

    * Pollutants: Unwanted substances like pesticides, heavy metals, and chemicals that can harm the environment.

    * Colloids: Tiny particles, like clay, that hold water and nutrients.

So, soil is a complex mixture of minerals, air, water, organic matter, and other components that all interact to create a vital environment for plant growth and life.
