  • What Exactly is a Volcano? Understanding Volcanic Formations
Volcanoes are not large land masses surrounded by oceans or other land. They are geological formations that rise above the surrounding land.

    Here's why:

    * Volcanoes are formed by eruptions: They occur when molten rock (magma) from the Earth's interior rises to the surface and erupts. This eruption creates a cone-shaped structure with a crater at the top.

    * Size varies greatly: Volcanoes come in many sizes, from small cinder cones to massive shield volcanoes.

    * Location is diverse: Volcanoes can be found on land, underwater, and even on other planets.

So, while a volcano might be on a landmass surrounded by oceans, it's not the landmass itself.
