  • Clasts: Understanding Rock Fragments and Their Formation
The type of rock physically broken into smaller pieces is called clast.

    Here's why:

    * Clast refers to a fragment of rock or mineral that has been broken from a larger rock.

    * Clasts are formed through various processes like weathering, erosion, and transportation.

    * The size and shape of clasts can vary greatly depending on the process that created them.

    Examples of clasts:

    * Gravel: Large clasts (bigger than 2mm)

    * Sand: Medium-sized clasts (between 0.0625 mm and 2 mm)

    * Silt: Fine clasts (between 0.0039 mm and 0.0625 mm)

    * Clay: Very fine clasts (smaller than 0.0039 mm)

These clasts can then be cemented together to form sedimentary rocks, like sandstone, conglomerate, and shale.
