  • Understanding Maps: A Guide to Different Types and Their Uses
A flat graphical representation of locations on Earth is called a map.

There are many different types of maps, each serving a specific purpose. Some common types include:

    * World Map: Shows the entire Earth's surface.

    * Topographic Map: Shows elevation and terrain features.

    * Political Map: Shows countries, states, and other political boundaries.

    * Road Map: Shows roads, highways, and other transportation routes.

    * Thematic Map: Shows a specific theme, such as population density, climate, or economic activity.

Because the Earth is a sphere, it is impossible to create a perfectly accurate flat representation of it. All maps involve some degree of distortion, which is why different map projections are used to minimize specific types of distortion depending on the purpose of the map.
